It is important to note, there is so much to cover in these classes we will only spend a short time focusing on each exercise, therefore it is vital to practice at home between classes, and continue practicing once the course has ended. Keep the training sessions short, just a few minutes here and there will do your puppy wonders.

Additional Information

What to bring

  • Your puppy
  • Food your puppy likes - a lot of it in little bits (their kibble, chicken, treats etc) - I recommend using a treat pouch or bum bag to hold treats in an easily accessible way
  • A toy your puppy likes - ideally not squeaky toys or toys that roll - these can be too distracting for the other puppies
  • Poo bags
  • Collar, (and/ or a harness if you have one)
  • Lead (no extendable leads please)
  • Bowl for water
  • Water for yourself
  • Small piece of bedding/ blanket / mat for your puppy to relax on and practice settling
  • Proof of Vaccination
  • Any members of family interested in learning, including children over 5 (they will be learning how to interact and train the puppy too)
  • Wear comfy clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty - the classes are outdoors so please dress ready for the weather

Preparing for the puppy classes

Car travel

To reach the training site your puppy will have to travel by car. It is best to get your puppy used to car travel beforehand, to reduce their stress or likelihood for car sickness.

It is recommended to prepare them as follows:

  • Play with your puppy and feed treats and small meals in the parked car to build good associations with being in a car
  • Take your puppy on short journeys, ending with a walk or a play session
  • Place your puppy on non-slip, absorbent bedding for the journey. A smaller space is better than a large one so your puppy can lean against the sides for support. A travel crate is good for this.
  • Close doors carefully and drive considerately. Remember that your puppy cannot see where the car is going, is not sitting in a seat, and cannot predict when the next corner will be coming up
  • Please note it is required by law that dogs are suitably restrained in a vehicle (e.g. crate, in the boot with a guard, or attached to a seatbelt with a harness)

Treats and Toys

Puppies joining the class need to be interested in working for the rewards you offer during training. Mostly this will mean TREATS (and lots of them)!

I also recommend not feeding your puppy just before the class, a small meal a few hours earlier should be fine.

Bringing a toy for your puppy is another thing I recommend, it can be a good motivator and reward for a playful pup.

Vaccinations and disease control

Please make sure your puppy is vaccinated and wormed before your first class session. You will need to bring a vaccination certificate with you to class. To help reduce risk of disease spread there is not a communal water bowl (hence why I ask you to bring your own).

Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the first class. This will allow your puppy to recover from the journey, take a small walk and go to toilet before coming into class. Try to avoid other puppies during this time rather than let them meet others and play. This will allow your puppy to relax, toilet and be ready for class.
